Tokyo Night is a novel set in the metropolis of Tokyo, Japan postmodernism. The titles of the chapters go through the main stations of the subway in the capital are the meeting point for young people, the equivalent of the squares in European culture.
The novel was written from the perspective of a Japanese girl between the ages of twenty and thirty years, Keiko, not only with regard to the plot and content, but also for the linguistic style: the intention is to make it look a translation of a Japanese text. As an oriental, the author has used phrases and images typical of Japanese culture, inspired by modern and contemporary authors such as Banana Yoshimoto, Haruki Murakami, Natsu Kirino and Yasunari Kawabata. For this reason, were added to the explanatory notes for hard to understand for a novice reader of the culture of Japan, such as traditional festivals, celebrities, food, historical events.
The plot takes place on several levels. While on the one hand, the protagonist goes on a journey of personal growth with the two men most important to her, before reaching a final decision, the other lives in the present filtering it through the memories of people who are no longer part of his life, or because they disappeared (the mother, the unborn child) or because they moved away (Masayuki's ex-boyfriend, the father).
